Jazz Concert Rome December 9 2025 Basies Bag Tribute to Count Basie at Elegance Cafè Jazz Club
On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, the Elegance Cafè Jazz Club invites you to experience a unique evening: jazz concerts Rome December 9 2025 with “Basie’s Bag”, a refined tribute to Count Basie. In the heart of Rome, at Via Francesco Carletti 5, an exceptional quartet celebrates the king of swing with live music, gourmet cuisine, and signature mixology — perfect for anyone looking for an original night out that combines jazz in Rome with an elegant atmosphere.
A must-see concert for swing lovers
The project Basie’s Bag was born from the desire to pay homage to William James “Count” Basie, the pianist and bandleader who brought jazz to new heights with his orchestra. The aim is to evoke the energy of the great big bands of the 1930s and 1940s, reinterpreting their repertoire in a contemporary way while preserving the essence of swing. Two sets full of rhythm and improvisation will guide the audience through masterpieces that shaped the history of African American music.
The lineup on stage
- Massimo Pirone – trombone and arrangements
- Pietro Caroleo – piano
- Carlo Battisti – drums
The quartet led by Massimo Pirone blends orchestral precision with jazz spontaneity. On trombone and direction, Pirone is joined by young pianist Pietro Caroleo and drummer Carlo Battisti, musicians who combine experience and freshness, delivering dynamic and engaging interplay.
The repertoire: timeless swing and new interpretations
The evening will feature the most famous pieces from the Count Basie Orchestra, such as One O’Clock Jump and Jumpin’ at the Woodside, which defined the big band sound. Classics like April in Paris and Everyday I Have the Blues will also be included — pieces that brought Basie international acclaim. The ensemble reinterprets these masterpieces with modern arrangements, leaving space for improvisation and instrumental dialogue while maintaining the driving swing pulse that made the 1930s orchestra iconic.
Short bios of the musicians
Massimo Pirone is a trombonist, bass trombonist, and tubist. After graduating from the conservatory, he began his career performing on major Italian TV programs and recording soundtracks for composers such as Ennio Morricone. He has collaborated with important Italian and international jazz musicians — from Enrico Rava to Quincy Jones — and has taken part in festivals such as Umbria Jazz, Pescara Jazz, and Sounds of the Dolomites. His discography includes albums like Portrait of Trombone and Directly from the Heart.

Pietro Caroleo, born in 1996, studied classical piano at the Conservatory of Latina and later jazz piano at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia. He refined his technique with masters such as Roberto Tarenzi, Dado Moroni, and Luca Mannutza. Alongside piano, he has always played the Hammond organ. He collaborates with artists such as Gegè Munari, Marco Valeri, and Daniele Cordisco, performs in Rome’s top clubs (Gregory’s, Alexanderplatz), and participates in festivals such as Umbria Jazz.
Carlo Battisti studied drums with legends such as Jimmy Cobb and Max Roach, later continuing with Marvin “Smitty” Smith at New York’s Drummers Collective. In 1988 he won the “Musicisti di Jazz” competition with the Tony Pancella Trio, and in 1990 the Forlì Jazz Contest with Tetracolours. He has played with artists including Massimo Urbani, Lee Konitz, Joe Pass, and Wynton Marsalis, performing in major Italian clubs and theaters and in international festivals such as Umbria Jazz and Pescara Jazz. He also teaches seminars and masterclasses.

Who was Count Basie?
William James “Count” Basie (1904–1984) was one of the greatest pianists and bandleaders in the history of jazz. Born in Red Bank, New Jersey, he received his first piano lessons from his mother and was influenced by James P. Johnson and Fats Waller, who taught him to play the organ. After performing in the vaudeville circuit, he joined Walter Page’s Blue Devils and later Bennie Moten’s orchestra. After Moten’s death in 1935, Basie formed the Barons of Rhythm, the nucleus of what would become the Count Basie Orchestra, featuring musicians such as Lester Young and Jimmy Rushing.

During a radio broadcast, the announcer renamed him “Count” in analogy with Duke Ellington — a nickname destined to become legendary. With the support of producer John Hammond, the band achieved great success with pieces such as “One O’Clock Jump” and “Jumpin’ at the Woodside”, which became symbols of the swing big band era. Basie was known for his minimalist yet incisive piano style and impeccable direction, which emphasized rhythmic groove and improvisation.
In 1958 he became the first African American man to receive a Grammy Award; he went on to win eight more during his career, and many of his recordings — such as April in Paris and Everyday I Have the Blues — entered the Grammy Hall of Fame. He collaborated with artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Dizzy Gillespie, and relaunched his orchestra in 1952 after a period of decline. Basie died in 1984, leaving a musical legacy without equal, having defined the swing era and inspired generations of musicians.
