Led by Giulia Lorenzoni, the quartet approaches the repertoire of the Queen of Soul from a contemporary perspective, creating an evening centred on voice, improvisation and expressive intensity.
Around Aretha was developed by Giulia Lorenzoni, Riccardo Fassi, Stefano Cantarano and Pierpaolo Ferroni as a musical journey through the vast repertoire of Aretha Franklin.
Rather than simply reproducing her most famous songs, the project explores them through a jazz sensibility, allowing space for new dynamics, improvisation and personal interpretation.
It is a tribute built around the emotional character of the original music while giving each performance its own identity.
Aretha Franklin’s musical world brings together gospel, rhythm and blues and soul.
Around Aretha takes this powerful vocal tradition and places it within a jazz quartet, where piano, double bass and drums interact closely with the voice.
The result is a concert that moves between the direct emotional impact of soul and the openness of jazz improvisation.
Giulia Lorenzoni – vocals
Riccardo Fassi – piano
Stefano Cantarano – double bass
Pierpaolo Ferroni – drums
Each musician brings a substantial jazz background to the project, creating a line-up capable of balancing structure and freedom.
Giulia Lorenzoni is a jazz singer, author and writer whose artistic work also includes theatre and television.
She has released four albums and two books, studied jazz singing at Saint Louis College of Music and the Licinio Refice Conservatory and is active on the European jazz scene.
Her background in music, writing and performance makes her particularly suited to a tribute that depends not only on vocal technique but also on interpretation and storytelling.
Born in Memphis in 1942, Aretha Franklin began singing at a young age in her father’s church choir.
Her career later moved from spirituals and gospel toward rhythm and blues and soul, where her intensely expressive voice established her as one of the defining performers of American music.
Songs associated with the repertoire include I Never Loved a Man, Baby I Love You and Respect.
Around Aretha approaches this repertoire as living material.
The arrangements and interaction between the musicians create space for different colours and moods, making the evening equally suited to longtime admirers of Aretha Franklin and listeners discovering her musical world through jazz.
Guests can experience Around Aretha with the drink and concert formula for €25 or choose to combine the concert with dinner.
The dinner formula includes two à la carte courses selected from starters, first courses and main courses.
Elegance Cafè combines the performance with cuisine influenced by Italian, Creole and Cajun traditions and a cocktail bar inspired by 1920s speakeasies.
It creates an ideal setting for a date, an anniversary, a special occasion or simply a different evening of live music in Rome.
The venue combines carefully designed acoustics, comfortable seating and close proximity to the stage.
This intimate atmosphere is particularly suited to a concert in which the voice and the musicians’ interaction are central.
Rather than experiencing the performance from a distance, guests remain closely connected to the music throughout the evening.
Date: Thursday, October 8, 2026
Venue: Elegance Cafè Jazz Club
Address: Via Francesco Carletti, 5 – Rome
Opening: 6:00 PM
Dinner: from 7:00 PM
Concert: 9:30 PM
Drink and concert: €25
Dinner and concert: two à la carte courses, variable price
Reserve your table for Around Aretha and enjoy an evening where jazz, soul, dinner and cocktails meet in the refined atmosphere of Elegance Cafè.
with
Around Aretha – ARETHA FRANKLIN tribute
Alternatively you can call (39) 3791360278
